Executive Coaching

Executives have a unique situation -- they are high enough in the organization that most forms of structured coaching and leadership development opportunities do not adequately speak to the issues and challenges at their level. The avenue then is to work with an executive coach who is a trusted, experienced, objective ally and who can co-create a customized program that addresses an executive's specific concerns and focus and who is available, by phone or in person as often as the need arises.

Each executive's situation is distinct which is why a customized plan is created for the leader and the situation. We work with leaders to define their executive development, leadership, and personal goals and identify the specific coaching plan that is just right for them.

Phase 1. The engagement begins with one or two advance meetings to design the coach-executive alliance, discuss initial goals and decide on the assessments that will be used. With assessments completed, the coach and executive meet for an in-person half-day intensive that results in a one-year master plan with short and long-range visions, values, strengths and challenges outlined, and long and short-range goals in place. The result is a robust executive master plan with monthly and quarterly actions.

Phase 2.  Within two weeks of the launch day, a series of coaching sessions begins with meetings taking place two, three or four times per month either in-person, by phone or both.

The master plan can be flexible and entail one or all of the following:

  • Regularly scheduled meetings, in person or by phone. In-person meetings are from 1.5 to 2 hours. Phone meetings are 45 minutes to one hour.
  • Shadow-coaching where the coach observes the executive in-person. This can involve both pre- and post-event coaching. The "event" can be anything from a small-group meeting to all-hands meetings to presentations at industry (and the like) events.
  • Spot coaching. An executive coach is on-call, generally with one day's notice or less, Monday through Friday with the exception of holidays and vacations for instances requiring in-the-moment coaching.

The initial coaching contract is for six months. Unused hours may be carried beyond the six months, but not more than seven. The engagement is reviewed at three and six months. If at the end of six months the executive chooses to continue, goals are revisited and revised and a contract for the next agreed-upon time period is signed.
